VfB Stuttgart vs. SC Freiburg (25.02.2012 – 14:30 GMT)

Stuttgart welcome Freiburg to the Neckarstadion Stadium this weekend in a juicy lower half battle between the two sides as they both fight for stability in an all too unpredictable league.

The game between promises an air of unpredictability that has gone on to define the league this season.  Despite Stuttgart’s hazy form this season; the club sit comfortable in 9th place – nice spots in front of Freiburg, but only eight points ahead.

The winter break hadn’t initially seemed to help the struggling club, with two immediate defeats to high flyers ‘Gladbach and Schalke mirroring the poor form the club were in prior to the turn of the year. Between November and December, the club went through some terrible form, picking up only one victory and five points from six games. The southern side then regained some credit with a strong draw away to Leverkusen, which was then outshined by a fantastic 5-0 victory over Hertha Berlin.

The Reds looked as though they had turned the corner on their horrendous form, before travelling to Hannover last week and suffering a bitter 4-2 defeat. But with Freiburg this week, followed by Hamburg, Kaiserslautern, Hoffenheim and then Nurnberg – the club have a good opportunity to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the bottom half of the table.

Freiburg on the other hand have had a rather predictable season. With only four victories to their name so far, the club have been dancing with relegation for much of the Bundesliga season.

Glimpses of a change or a turn in form have come and gone throughout the season, but never stuck around long enough to help put some space between the club and relegation. The most recent of said ‘glimpses’ came last weekend when Bayern were held to a 0-0 draw at the Mage Solar Stadium, thanks to a spirited and passionate defensive effort from the squad. A quality that has been lacking for much of the season.

Whether Freiburg can build on this performance and pick up some form is another matter entirely, and something nobody will be able to say for sure until the final whistle goes on Saturday.
